Indian scientists discovered mermaid plant species in Andaman archipelago

Indian scientists discovered 'mermaid' plant species :-

Indian scientists have found a new plant species in India's Andaman archipelago. The Biologists discovered a marine green algae during a trip to the Andaman Island in 2019.

Identification of this species is stretchy, and it took the scientists nearly two years to confirm that the species had been discovered for the first time.

Scientists from Central University of Punjab have discovered this species and named it as Acetabularia jalakanyakae. Scientists say this is the first discovery of a species of algae in the islands in nearly four decades.

The Scientists say they were influenced by the fictional character Little Mermaid in the eponymous fairy tale by Danish writer Hans Christian Anderson. The word Jalakanyaka in Sanskrit literally means mermaid and a goddess of ocean.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India has some of the last remaining healthy coral reefs in the world. These coral reefs support a host of other organisms, including a rich diversity of algae species.

The main feature of the newly discovered species is that the plant is made up of one gigantic cell with a nucleus - botanically, the condition is called "coenocytic".It took scientists more than 18 months to sequence the plant's DNA and compare it with others in the lab.

However Climate Change affecting whole ocean eco system in the form of rising seawater temperature and making oceans more acidic, this rising seawater temperature decreases oxygen levels in water this will going to affect all the organisms like algae which depends on oxygen to live.
